This is a Severus character study, originally posted here for

It's kind of dark, and if you'd rather not read Tobias being physically/emotionally abusive, you can skip the first section without it really impacting on the rest of the story. So... I signed up for the HP Creatures fest, despite almost never reading creature!fic, because I fell in love with this prompt. It was a difficult story to write (it's pretty heavy on the angst), but after lots of help from three absolutely wonderful beta readers,

perverse_idyll, who was generous enough to let me write this. It is an unofficial prequel; my take on what might have led Snape to where he is in that story. I designed it to be as compatible as possible with the original, even though it may not appear that way at first glance :)
